To take part in a self-supported expedition, participants should be comfortable with the following skills and conditions.
Essential Paddling Skills
Participants need solid forward paddling technique for sustained distances.
You should possess basic boat control including edging, sweep strokes, and
reverse strokes. Knowledge of assisted rescues (T-rescue) is required,
along with self-rescue knowledge (which we will review on Day 1). Finally,
you must be comfortable launching and landing in varied conditions.
Environmental Awareness
We require an understanding of tides and wind influence. You should be
comfortable paddling loaded kayaks and able to manage your personal gear,
food, and hydration. Participants must also be able to follow guide-led
navigation decisions.
Physical Readiness
Physically, you should be able to paddle 8–12 miles per day and lift or
move your own personal gear. Capability to camp self-sufficiently is
essential.
Not sure if you are ready?
If you are unsure whether you meet the prerequisites, SKG will happily arrange a skills assessment or a pre-trip training session.
A welcoming pathway to build confidence.
Expedition kayaking is a rewarding way to explore the coast—but it can feel overwhelming if you’re new to camping from a boat, managing gear, or paddling heavy boats.
We offer a series of bridge programs to help you grow from a curious beginner into a confident expedition paddler. These offerings blend instruction, comfort, and hands-on experience with supportive guidance from our SKUK Expedition Center staff.
We provide world-class guiding while you bring your own personal expedition kit. This includes expert guides with deep knowledge of the Georgia coast. We handle the route planning, navigation, tidal strategy, weather assessment, and safety oversight.
We also provide skill development woven through the journey, along with group leadership and environmental interpretation. We can even provide an SKUK fleet of expedition kayaks if you don’t have one.
