Symposium 2011
Information for Registered Participants
Before you arrive
Check to make sure all your
pre requisites are in order. If
a CR or LR form is required for your course please mail it in to BCUNA for central
registration and approval at least 4-5 weeks prior to the symposium, only
authorized forms will be valid for classes. Please remember that exemptions
are the exception not the norm. Make
sure your first aid and cpr cards are up to date. Coach candidates for
Level 2 Coach Assessment and above will need logbooks.
Be prepared to
pay appropriate BCU fees during your course, BCU fees are not included
in symposium fee. For fee and form info visit BCU North America.
Registration/ Checking In
Check in at Sea Kayak Georgia on Tuesday, October 25 from 9:00 am until 6:00 pm. If you are not arriving until early Wednesday we
will be in the shop by 8:30 am. If you are not arriving until later in the week stop by the shop between 9:00 am and 6:00 pm to check in. You must check in and register prior to attending classes. Check in involves completing waivers and
checking to see that your name is listed on the roster for each day of
classes. Your launch site will be listed on the class roster, make a note of it, this is where the class will meet that morning. We'll give you a Tybee Driving Map and a print out of the tide log for the week. You can list your courses on this and on the map is the list of dinner meet ups and presentations.
Participation and Observation of courses is for registered participants only. We understand a number of kayaking folk visit during this time. Anyone interested in observing, paddling with or attending any parts of the symposium will need to be paid registered folk. Thanks for your respect of our paid particpants and understanding of our efforts to offer this top quality event, we invite everyone to register.
Parking on Tybee Island
Parking passes are issued
through Sea Kayak Georgia by the City of Tybee Island. You may purchase
passes at the time of registration/ check in, they are not available until then. All parking on Tybee is pay to park. If
you buy a pass and park anywhere other than designated parking you will
receive a ticket, which you are responsible for paying.
Parking is limited, so plan to arrive early to the launch site so that you will have time to unload gear and park without being late for class. Please honor all access issues with diplomacy, if you can't find parking you will have to go to a lot further away and walk back to the landing. Do not block access to launch site for the trailers or other vehicles unloading. At the Inlet Avenue launch site the Sea Kayak Georgia trailer has to drive down a very narrow lane. Please do not block our access to and from this landing. The van is making multiple pickups so time is of the essence in the afternoon.
Class Times
All Classes are conducted
from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Multi day classes may extend later than 4:00
pm if agreed upon by coach and students.
Class Changes
You may find you wish to
change a class due to progressing faster or slower than you expected.
We are very happy to make schedule changes. Here's how it works: come to
Sea Kayak Georgia in person (phone calls for schedule changes cannot be accepted) and a staff member will assist
you in moving your name to the class of your choice if there is availability.
Classes can be changed between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm the day before only.
What to Bring to Class
Appropriate clothing will
make your day much more enjoyable. October can have varying
conditions daily. Keep a close watch on the weather the week before you
arrive. Prepare for both moderately warm and quite cool.
You need to bring enough water to last for the duration of the class.
Pack your lunch and bring it with you. Don't forget your sunscreen. If the weather is cooler a thermos with hot beverage will be a nice addition to your kit.
Weather websites:
Accuweather, Weather Underground, NOAA
Keep checking these sites and they will let you know if you need shorts, wetsuit, or drysuit.
Dinners
Two group dinner meetups are planned for Thursday at North Beach Grill and Saturday at Tybee Island Social Club. The meet ups will require you to be financially responsible for your meal and drinks that evening at the restaurant.
Saturday night meetup will follow the presentation by Nigel Dennis. Also, on Saturday night Tybee Island will celebrate halloween, this year's Sea Kayak Georgia theme is "Tacky Tourist", so throw on that Hawaiian shirt, straw hat and camera and get with it!
Friday night we will have our annual Oyster Roast...yes, this year it is on again. What's different? Well, it is an oyster roast and an oyster roast only...so if you love shuckin' oysters this is it! The cost $20 per person, reservations available until October 22.
Presentations
Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings we will have one or several guest speakers to share their
kayaking adventures from around the world. These presentations are included
with registration. Presentations will be held at Sea Kayak Georgia.
Retail Shop
We maintain a full service shop with all the essentials needed for a great time on the water. We also have lots of cool Sea Kayak Georgia stuff, too.
