Ben Lawry Instructional Series
Forward Stroke Clinic
Over 99% of your time is spent paddling forward, yet
it is very rarely talked about or taught. This is the introduction to
get you started on the correct path for a more enjoyable paddling career.
Efficiency and correct body use are the keys here to keep you paddling
for hours at a time with ease and grace.
Core Paddling
Join Ben Lawry for his class covering the basics of
kayaking. The goal for Core Paddling is to provide a solid ergonomic and
efficient set of skills for people to grow through their kayaking career.
The subjects covered are correct grip and hand placement in the paddle
shaft, check on boat fit, and an explanation of terms. Balance, posture,
and tilting are covered as is correct blade and boat use to guarantee
a good foundation to grow from. Strokes covered may include forward and
reverse sweeps, pivot turns, reverse stroke, forward stroke, and low braces.
Intro to Short Boat Surfing
An introduction to the skills needed to play
safely in the surf, followed by a practice session in small waves. Included
in this class, we cover
how to take advantage of a following sea, setting up to land, riding
the wave and the foam pile. Leaving the beach, stroke timing and basic
tactics for dealing with on-coming waves are also covered.
Phunctional Adaptations
Phunctional Adaptations are the next evolution of Ben Lawry's popular instructional series: Forward Stroke, Core Paddling and Rolling. These classes are designed to take the paddler from great flatwater skills to a more dynamic environment. Building on the ergonomics and boat presentations learned in the basic series, Phat Forward and Phunctioning Core take these elements to next level and focus on making us more efficient paddlers with less chance of injury.
Phat Forward
Begin witha quick recap of Forward Stroke Clinic, both on land and on the water and start adding a few new components. We'll find opportunities to use and refine our skills, concentrating on keeping the kayak and its momentum moving forward as efficiently as possible. We'll practice turns (both going up and down current), choosing good lines, picking up swells, wakes, and/or waves. Learn when to increase or decrease power output.
Pre-requisite: Forward Stroke
Phunctioning Core
In this class, you will learn how to take the fundamental skills from Core Paddling to practical skills in the moving water environment. We use the conditions present to shape the class to best suit the needs of the group/paddlers. Our focus will be on skill acquisition thraough technique to maximize the performance of the kayak and kayaker.
Pre-requisite: Core Paddling
Combat Rolling (Very Wet Sport)
Having a reasonable “set-up” roll is one thing but making it useful in the real world is the goal. We shall play with exercises and games to increase your comfort and understanding of how to make your roll bombproof when it matters.
Forward Stroke (On water) Over 99% of your time is spent paddling forward, yet it is very rarely talked about or taught. This is the introduction to get you set on the correct path for a more enjoyable and efficient paddling career. Efficiency and correct body use are the keys here to keep you paddling for hours at a time with ease and grace. We start with exercises on the ground and work on our form and theory. Then we move to the water and into our kayaks.
Core Paddling (On water) This class covers the basics of kayaking. Its goal is to provide a solid ergonomic and efficient set of skills for people to grow through their kayaking career. The subjects covered are correct grip and hand placement on the paddle shaft, check on boat fit and an explanation of terms. Balance, posture and tilting are covered as is correct blade and boat use to guarantee a good foundation to grow from. Strokes covered may include forward and reverse sweeps, pivot turns, reverse stroke, forward stroke and low braces. (Beginner classes or non-beginner classes but not both at the same time.) (This is not a forward stroke class very little forward stroke is covered if any.)
Journey through the Wind (On Water)
You will learn how to take the fundamental skills from Core Paddling to practical skills for controlling your kayak though the wind. We use the conditions present to shape the class to best use the wind. Our focus will be on turning the kayak efficiently though the four main points of the wind. Lets hope there is a little breeze blowing.
Pre-requisite: Core Paddling
Train Wrecks and Sleds (In the Water)
There are 2 kinds of paddlers - “those that have swum and those that will” Using this basic premise we will practice and play with different techniques to help people back into their boats if they are damaged or undamaged. If they are damaged we need to know how to transport them also so we look at different towing scenarios and the suitability for different applications. Focus will be on safety and ergonomics.
Wee-balls wobble but they do not fall in! (In the Water)
A detailed look at the art of not falling in having been knocked off balance. We will discuss the suitability of different bracing styles and techniques. Keeping the movements safe and productive and helping people stay upright in various situations, positions and surf. Fit, technique and safety all looked at.
